These business entities positively contribute to the GDP and exports in India’s economy. That has made them an essential part of the overall economic framework of the nation.
Classification of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises based on their performance assumes a lot of importance in the economic growth of the enterprises themselves and the nation as a whole. A proper classification of MSME determines access to government benefits, financial incentives, and compliance requirements.

In fact, the MSMEs are known to contribute to the development of the industrial sector and create employment opportunities. In fact, these business entities are more helpful in creating a strong economy in rural and semi urban areas.

The government of India introduced the new and updated MSME classification in July 2020. It has redefined the classification of MSMEs based on their investment capability and turnover. This has made it possible to provide a broader coverage and support for the sector.
The change was indeed in the right direction. In the earlier regime, the MSMEWs were classified based on their investments alone. The addition of turnover provides a more holistic assessment of the enterprise. That would mean a business will continue to get the benefits even when it is scaling up.
The new classification of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises takes into account both investment and turnover for classifying the businesses into the different categories.
The table below should give you a clear understanding of the classification effective in 2025 -
Enterprise Type | Investment | MSME Turnover Limit |
Micro Enterprise | Rs 2.5 crore | Rs 10 crore |
Small Enterprise | Rs 25 crore | Rs 100 crore |
Medium Enterprise | Rs 125 crore | Rs 500 crore |
If the turnover goes beyond Rs 500 crores per annum, the enterprise will no longer belong to the MSME sector. It will be considered a large-scale enterprise.
Even the credit facility for the MSME sector enhanced considerably. A new scheme for first-time entrepreneurs, especially women and marginalised groups is announced, the details of which will be available soon.
The new classification encourages the businesses to grow without the need to lose on the benefits.
